What Makes the F-450 Different

More Than Just a Bigger F-350

The jump from F-350 to F-450 isn't just a number. It's a fundamentally different truck — heavier axles, larger wheels, higher frame ratings, and a payload capacity that enables upfits the F-350 simply can't support.

19.5" Commercial Wheels

The F-450 rides on 19.5-inch commercial-grade wheels — the same spec used on medium-duty trucks. This enables higher load ratings and supports heavier tire options for demanding terrain and payload.

  • Higher load rating per tire than 18" F-350 wheels
  • Wider tire footprint for load distribution
  • Commercial tire availability at fleet tire shops
Cab-and-Chassis Configuration

The F-450 is most commonly ordered as a cab-and-chassis — no pickup bed, just a cab and frame rails ready for a commercial body. This opens the full range of heavy upfit options.

  • Service bodies up to 14' in length
  • Flatbeds and stake bodies to 16'
  • Dump bodies from 4 to 6 yards
  • Crane and mechanics truck bodies
Crew Cab Availability

Unlike most medium-duty trucks, the F-450 offers full Crew Cab configuration — four doors, full rear seat, enough room for a crew of five. You don't sacrifice crew capacity for payload.

  • Full 4-door crew cab with rear legroom
  • Available in XL through Platinum trim
  • Standard Ford SYNC 4 infotainment
  • Pro Power Onboard available for job site power
Powertrain

Engine Options

The F-450 is available with the same two powertrains as the F-350 — but the diesel is the dominant choice for operators using the truck's full Class 4 capability.

7.3L V8 Gas
Port Injection Gasoline
430 hp
Horsepower
485 lb-ft
Torque

The 7.3L V8 is available on the F-450 for operators who want lower upfront cost and simpler maintenance without diesel emissions systems. Best suited for lighter upfit applications where maximum payload is not required every day. No DEF, no DPF, no EGR complexity.

6.7L Power Stroke Diesel
Turbocharged V8 Diesel
500 hp
Horsepower
1,200 lb-ft
Torque

The 6.7L Power Stroke is the standard choice for F-450 commercial work. Its 1,200 lb-ft of torque is what makes Class 4 payload and towing ratings achievable in real-world conditions. Required for max tow and payload ratings. The preferred engine for fleet operators running loaded upfits daily.

Industries & Applications

Who Runs the F-450

The F-450 is the entry point for serious commercial upfit work — industries that have outgrown the F-350 and need Class 4 payload without moving to a full medium-duty truck.

🔩
Utility & Telecom
Mechanics truck bodies with cranes, liftgates, and tool storage. The F-450 handles the body weight and still maneuvers in tight utility corridors.
🏗️
Heavy Construction
Flatbed and service body combos carrying heavy materials and equipment. The Class 4 frame handles loads that flex an F-350 at its limits.
🚛
Towing & Recovery
Light-duty wrecker and flatbed tow configurations. The F-450 is the most popular platform for light wrecker builds nationwide.
🌾
Agriculture
Heavy livestock and equipment trailers. The 40,000 lb tow rating with diesel handles the largest gooseneck loads without breaking a sweat.
Electrical & HVAC
Large service bodies with aerial lift packages. The F-450's payload supports a fully stocked service body plus bucket truck attachments.
🚒
Municipal & Fire
Brush fire apparatus, rescue bodies, and municipal utility trucks. The Crew Cab keeps a full crew comfortable while the chassis carries the load.

F-450 vs F-350: When You Need to Step Up

The F-350 tops out at 7,640 lbs payload and 35,000 lbs towing. If your upfit body weighs more than 3,000 lbs empty, or if you're regularly running at or near those limits, the F-450 is the right call. The additional GVWR and payload headroom isn't just about numbers — it's about operating within safe margins every day, and extending the life of your truck.

The 19.5-inch wheels are also a practical consideration: they enable heavier tire load ratings and give access to commercial tire pricing at fleet accounts, which matters for operators running 50,000+ miles per year.

F-450 vs F-550: Knowing the Difference

The F-550 shares the same cab as the F-450 but steps up to Class 5 with a higher GVWR, heavier frame, and higher payload. The F-450 is the right choice when your upfit doesn't push past its limits — it's lighter, more maneuverable, and costs less. Move to the F-550 when your body weight plus payload exceeds what the F-450 can safely carry.

Common Upfit Configurations

Service Bodies

The F-450 cab-and-chassis is the most popular platform for Knapheide, Reading, and Stahl service bodies in the 10'–12' range. The Class 4 payload allows a fully loaded service body — compartments full of tools, parts, and equipment — without exceeding GVWR.

Flatbeds

Steel and aluminum flatbeds from 10' to 16' work well on the F-450 chassis. The longer wheelbase Crew Cab chassis supports a 16' flatbed with proper weight distribution. Common in construction, agriculture, and equipment transport.

Dump Bodies

The F-450 supports 4–5 yard dump body configurations. It's the most common dump truck platform for landscaping, excavation, and debris hauling operations that need a CDL-exempt commercial vehicle.

Crane & Mechanics Trucks

Combination service body and crane packages — typically a 3,000–4,000 lb body with a 3,500–6,000 lb crane — are well within F-450 payload. This is the primary configuration for utility, pipeline, and heavy equipment service contractors.

Fleet Pricing & National Delivery

Peoria Ford offers fleet pricing on all F-450 configurations, including upfit coordination with authorized body builders. For multi-unit orders, dedicated commercial fleet managers handle spec-to-delivery. National delivery available to all 48 contiguous states — out-of-state buyers receive full pre-delivery inspection and documentation.
