The Heaviest Super Duty Built

The F-550 sits at the top of the Super Duty chassis cab lineup at Class 5 (16,001–19,500 lbs GVWR). It shares the cab with the F-450 but steps up with a heavier frame, higher axle ratings, and greater payload capacity.

Platform Advantages

Why the F-550 Exists

The F-550 fills the gap between the F-450 and the F-650 medium-duty truck — more capability than a Class 4, but still drivable without a CDL in most applications and without the operating cost of a dedicated medium-duty.

Heavier Frame & Axles

The F-550 uses heavier frame rails and higher-rated axles than the F-450, enabling higher GVWR and greater body weight capacity. This matters when your upfit body alone weighs 4,000–6,000 lbs before loading.

  • Higher front axle rating than F-450
  • Heavier rear axle for increased payload
  • Stronger frame section modulus for body support
  • Rated for longer wheelbase body configurations
Upfit Body Range

The F-550 chassis supports a wider range of body lengths and weights than the F-450. Most body builders offer their full lineup on the F-550 platform because its GVWR provides payload headroom for heavy builds.

  • Dump bodies up to 6–7 yards
  • Service bodies up to 14'
  • Flatbeds up to 16' on extended wheelbase
  • Wrecker and rollback configurations
  • Bus and shuttle body applications
CDL Threshold

The F-550 at 19,500 lbs GVWR generally does not require a CDL when operated as a single vehicle — keeping your drivers on the road without additional licensing cost or compliance complexity. Always verify with your state DOT for specific configurations and combination vehicle rules.

  • No CDL required for most single-vehicle configs
  • Trailer combination rules vary by state
  • Medical certificate may still be required
  • Commercial registration required in most states
Powertrain

6.7L Power Stroke: The Right Engine

The F-550 is almost universally spec'd with the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel. At Class 5 payload levels, the gas engine's torque output leaves too much capability on the table. The diesel is the commercial operator's choice.

Torque

The 7.3L V8 is available on the F-550 for operators with specific gas requirements — government fleet standardization, natural gas conversion prep, or operations in areas without reliable diesel supply. For most commercial F-550 applications, the gas engine leaves significant capability unused. No DEF or DPF maintenance required.

Standard Commercial Choice
500 hp
Horsepower
1,200 lb-ft
Torque

The 6.7L Power Stroke paired with the 10-speed TorqShift automatic is the drivetrain that makes the F-550 work. At 1,200 lb-ft of torque, it pulls loaded dump bodies, heavy flatbeds, and full service body loadouts without laboring. The preferred spec for any operator running the truck near its GVWR on a daily basis.

Industries & Applications

Who Runs the F-550

The F-550 is the truck for operators who've maxed out the F-450 and need more payload headroom without stepping into a full medium-duty commercial vehicle.

🚛
Towing & Recovery
Medium-duty wrecker and rollback tow trucks. The F-550 is the most common platform for 10,000–14,000 lb GVW vehicle recovery.
🏗️
Excavation & Grading
5–7 yard dump bodies for dirt, rock, and debris. The F-550 handles loads that would exceed the F-450's payload on every cycle.
🔩
Heavy Service & Crane
Large mechanics truck bodies with 6,000–8,000 lb crane packages. The F-550 frame carries the combined body and crane weight with payload remaining.
🌿
Tree Service
Chip body and grapple trucks for large tree service operations. The F-550 supports full-size chip bodies that overload the F-450.
🚌
Shuttle & Transit
Shuttle bus and transit van bodies up to 20 passengers. The F-550 chassis is a common base for commercial bus body manufacturers.
Utility & Linework
Digger derrick and aerial lift packages for electrical and telecom. The Class 5 frame handles the combined weight of equipment and outrigger loads.

F-550 vs F-450: When to Step Up

The F-450 and F-550 share the same cab, the same engines, and the same 19.5-inch wheels. The difference is in the frame and axle ratings. If your body builder tells you the body you want exceeds the F-450's payload capacity — or if you're running at the F-450's GVWR limit regularly — the F-550 gives you the headroom to operate safely and legally.

A practical example: a 12' service body with full compartment loading can weigh 5,000–7,000 lbs. Add the cab and chassis weight and you're at or past the F-450's limit. The F-550's 19,500 lb GVWR gives you the margin to run that load safely every day.

F-550 vs F-650: Where the Super Duty Ends

The F-650 is a true medium-duty truck — different chassis architecture, air brakes on higher GVWR configurations, and a fundamentally different ownership and operating cost profile. The F-550 is the top of the pickup-derived chassis cab range. If your operation requires more than 19,500 lbs GVWR or a body longer than 16', the F-650 is the next step. For most operators, the F-550 is the sweet spot — maximum Super Duty capability without crossing into medium-duty complexity.

Common Upfit Configurations

Dump Bodies

The F-550 is one of the most popular dump truck platforms for landscape, excavation, and construction contractors. A 5–6 yard steel or aluminum dump body fits well on the F-550 chassis with a long wheelbase cab. Hydraulic hoist systems from Reading, Crysteel, and Rugby are common upfitter choices.

Flatbed & Stake Bodies

Steel and aluminum flatbeds from 12' to 16' are a common F-550 configuration. The extended wheelbase chassis supports longer bodies with proper weight distribution. Popular for equipment hauling, material delivery, and agricultural transport.

Service & Crane Bodies

Knapheide, Reading, and Maintainer service bodies in the 11'–14' range paired with 4,000–8,000 lb cranes are within F-550 payload capacity. This is the dominant configuration for pipeline, utility, and heavy equipment service contractors.

Rollback & Wrecker

The F-550 is the most popular platform for 19-foot rollback tow trucks and light wrecker builds rated up to 12,000 lbs. Century, Jerr-Dan, and Dynamic bodies are commonly upfitted on the F-550 chassis cab.

Ordering & Fleet Pricing

The F-550 is most commonly ordered as a cab-and-chassis and upfitted by an authorized body builder. Peoria Ford coordinates with regional body builders for complete turnkey builds — cab-and-chassis delivery, body install, and final vehicle delivery to your fleet. Fleet pricing available on multi-unit orders. National delivery to all 48 contiguous states with full documentation.
